The northern province of La Rioja continues with its promotion and support to the activity. The Governor Luis Beder Herrera not only revoked the ban to mining imposed in 2007, but also put in motion a plan to encourage the return of the companies.
This was clearly shown at PDAC 2009 where government representatives showcased the mining potential and opportunities of La Rioja. They were able to gauge the interest in the province and their assessment was extremely positive.
Today, some 12 companies are active, among them Teck Cominco and Latin American Minerals from Canada, and Jackson Minerals from Australia.
Metalliferous mining in La Rioja reemerged from the ashes last year when Governor Luis Beder Herrera got the derogation of a 2007 law that prohibited the activity.“We have the support of investors. There are strong expectations in La Rioja, many companies are requesting more information, which is a good sign,” stated the Secretary of Mining, Oscar Lhez, about the positive role of the province at PDAC 2009. Also, he stated that there is much interest in San Juan's uranium and “companies are starting to prospect”.
